1. teen4m and PHP

January 23, 2008 by Callum Haywood

Well I now know that teen4m only likes to work with PHP5. That’s good though, since support for PHP4 has been ceased.

PHP4 just returns session_start(); errors. I know this because I’ve tested it on two servers with PHP4 installed on them.

My server has PHP5 installed by default – I’ve used PHP5 since I set my server up. Hopefully PHP6 can bring some enhancements.

Just a quick post this was…

  2. iTunes, hungry bandwidth eater…

January 6, 2008 by Callum Haywood

So here I am browsing the web and it suddenly starts going really slow. I checked other websites just to make sure. No, so I use NetSupport to remote control to my parents machine, and sure enough, someone was listening to the 30-second previews quite often from the iTunes Store.

Only a few days later, I was downloading like 2GB of torrents and naturally set the bandwidth consumption to maximum, then every computer on the networks internet connection was extremely slow. Only to find that iTunes kept on “Buffering”. Since it uses IEs proxy settings, I really should set up some sort of bandwidth throttling system to make sure that iTunes doesn’t buffer and the I can browse the net at a reasonable speed.

  3. New server, same blog…

    by Callum Haywood

    Hello everyone.

You might now know that my blog isn’t located at callumh.wordpress.com anymore.

I’ve moved to the same server as my main website and it’s not my really slow home server, instead its an unlimited kindly provided by my friend Andrew Whyman from AWShost.co.uk who has got a dedicated in France.

This is now probably the fastest my blog has ever been, since my server was slow and wordpress.com was congested.

Hopefully I can blog about all things technology related now more efficiently.

    Thanks,
    Callum

  4. FreeSpire…

January 4, 2008 by Callum Haywood

This is in FreeSpire right, they’ve got Firefox, changed it to say Web Browser and have the cheek to change the default search engine to Windows Live Search. This is Windows search on Linux. I’ve never heard anything so silly.

I was absolutely disgusted. This is in FreeSpire – Linspire based Linux running in live mode on my laptop.

But things get worse. They’ve got Ubuntu 7.10, changed all the orangey bits to blue, changed the logo, changed from Gnome to KDE (which doesn’t matter because I like KDE).

Don’t worry though, things get even more worse. I can’t run it in normal graphics mode, so I have to run it in safe mode. Because of this, I get 1204×768 resolution on a screen thats resolution is 1280×800. I go to change it “K” > “Settings” > “Control Center” > “Perhiperals” > “Display” > “Administrator Mode” and the window is so small, I can’t even press the “Apply” button. So thats it. I’m stuck with 1204×768 until I install (which wont happen soon, and if I install it, I can change my X config)…

Thats it. FreeSpire Linux. Visually looks nice (apart from being pixelated), performs okay, and I like it (somewhat).
